Wednesday Morning...CAW

Joining CAW late last year was a good move to make as it has already given me opportunities to network with fellow artists and show work in a safe and supportive environment.  CAW: Creating Our History will open Monday, March 5 at the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery.

If you have not visited this gallery space before, it is definitely worth the effort especially when it is filled with the work of these lovely & talented women.  For more information about this event visit CAW .

Wednesday Morning...You Know The Drill

Momentum...sometimes elusive and if gone for too long (at least for me), it can be devastating to progress & growth.  Every now and then a blip of something someone once said to me jumps into my head and today that something is about the care & keeping of momentum.  Gordon Lee, one of my painting instructors from college once told me that often times the most challenging thing for a painter to overcome is momentum (or lack there of, I should say).  At that time, I'm not sure that I understood fully what he meant.  I thought of momentum as the frequency with which one creates.  I found myself jealous of those who seemed to have reached that place of continuous momentum (meaning they worked on art, all the time).  I now know that while frequency is the concrete idea that my momentum is built upon, what happens once you've reached & maintained this foundation is amazing.

momentum =

  1. The quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.
  2. The impetus gained by a moving object.

For me, momentum is:
Painting or making art at least three times a week
Working on something even when I don't feel like working on something
Using time of low inspiration for other art stuff like preparing canvas, blogging, looking at books
Devoting quality time to making the small stuff...all of it is art, don't discriminate
Be aware of the threads that can carry you from one piece to another

My progress report on mastering the elusive momentum....
As you read, my large assemblage project found its end recently which had the potential to stop me in my tracks.  Knowing this, I found books, sparking the inspiration.  Yesterday I focused on the small stuff and made several lovely assemblage minis as I'm trying to get a jump start on the festivals, it is important.  Today I focused on a thread while I anxiously await the next big idea.

Go make something!

Wednesday Morning Ritual

It seems that I am in one of 'ebb' periods of the ebb & flow of my creativity.  Although I am still working diligently on a large assemblage piece for the upcoming CAW show, I've had a slow week.  I've come to accept that the up & down is perfectly acceptable as we follow our creative voices as long as an up always follows a down.  It is understandable to take a break every once in a while.  When I'm in a down period, I try to insert other creative activities into my daily routine and this week I've spent time looking through and reading new art books.

coming soon...CAW Creating Our History

Helping It Come Together

I spent the weekend trying to unify all the parts of this piece using string, color, texture and birds.  It is slowly circling round and starting to tell its story.  More on this story to come...

I love this piece.  It is going to be part of the CAW Creating Our History show in  March and feel that it helps to show who I am as an artist and cements my history a little more.  This piece is a culmination of many things I love: birds, dots, suspended mystery cocoons, numbers, words and old stuff.

Wednesday Morning Ritual....Red Thread

I spent the morning stringing red thread over and around, up and down this piece.

I'm eagerly looking ahead to a four day break from work....excited to spend the time making art.
